Breast Augmentation Q & A
What is breast augmentation?
Breast augmentation is a well-established procedure that involves inserting silicone or saline implants into your breasts or using fat transferred from another part of your body.
You may be considering a breast augmentation procedure to restore your breasts if they’ve changed shape or lost volume, or if you feel self-conscious about the size of your breasts. Some women feel their breasts are too small, or they may be of noticeably different sizes that you feel affects your outline.
Why should I consider breast augmentation surgery?
Breasts are composed of mainly fatty tissues with no musculature in the breast tissue itself. This means that you can’t change the size or shape of your breasts through exercise. Losing or gaining weight can increase or reduce the quantity of fatty tissue in your breasts, but changing the shape or size of your breasts permanently requires an augmentation procedure.
Breast augmentation can restore the fullness of your breasts and increase their size in a way that looks natural, helping to boost your self-esteem and restore your confidence.
What causes breasts to lose their shape and tone?
Your breasts naturally start to lose volume as you age, and the effects of pregnancy and childbirth can also cause your breasts to change shape and lose their tone. Losing weight can reduce the size of your breasts, and losing a lot of weight could cause a significant change in the shape of your breasts.
What happens at my consultation?
When you see Dr. Walker, it’s important for him to make sure you have realistic expectations for the outcome of breast augmentation. He spends time discussing the procedure with you and what you can expect during and after your operation. He also needs to make sure you’re physically well enough to have surgery, and psychologically ready to undergo breast augmentation.
Once you decide to go ahead with the procedure, Dr. Walker schedules you in, and he greets you on the day of your surgery to ensure you’re well and still happy to go ahead.
You’re given a general anesthetic, so you’re unconscious throughout the surgery. When the anesthetic takes effect, Dr. Walker commences the operation, making an incision below the breast where the scar will be out of sight under the breast tissue. He inserts the implant and positions it so that you have a natural looking breast. Dr. Walker repeats the process on the other breast, and when the procedure is over, you go to the recovery room to come around from the anesthetic.
It takes around three months to heal after surgery fully, but you’ll see the difference in your breasts straight after the procedure.
